Training, care and racing of thoroughbred horses
Gittens Racing provides training and racing of thoroughbred horses in Winnipeg, Manitoba and Toronto, Ontario. The advertised position is at the Winnipeg location.
Beginning in March each year, the horses are housed, fed, trained, and cared for at Gittens’ Winnipeg business location at Assiniboine Downs. Horses are raced periodically during the season in accordance with the owners’ wishes, the horses’ readiness, and the suitability of available races.
The successful candidate will be running the Winnipeg chapter of Gittens Racing in its entirety during the 2026 season. As such, position requirements include:
1. A valid Assistant Trainer or Trainer Licence issued by the Liquor & Gaming Control Association of Manitoba. Will consider candidates who possess a valid Assistant Trainer or Trainer Licence issued by other provincial licensing bodies but an LCGAM licence must be obtained for this position.
2. A minimum of five seasons’ experience as a horse groom working with thoroughbred racehorses performing the following duties, which will form part of the job:
- Handling racehorses
- Bathing and shampooing racehorses
- Cleaning stables, barns, barnyards and pens
- Grooming horses in preparation for competitions and shows
- Preparing food and feeding horses
- Executing exercise/conditioning programs for racehorses
- Monitoring animal health
- Consulting with farriers and veterinarians
- Assisting with inoculation and treatment of horses
3. The position will entail the following duties, so the successful candidate will have experience with several of them:
- Maintaining financial and production records
- Hiring, training, scheduling and supervising work of other staff
- Payroll for staff
- Relations with clients (horse owners)
- Invoicing clients & receiving payments
- Ordering all required supplies and maintaining inventories
- Scheduling veterinary care and blacksmith
- Planning exercise/conditioning programs for racehorses
- Planning individualized feeding programs for racehorses
- Researching horse statistics and conditions, assessing suitable race entries
- Purchasing / claiming of new horses
- Public relations
- Overseeing the company’s operations at location
