Equestrian Instructor – Job Description
Purpose of the position:
An Equestrian Instructor of Hope Haven Equestrian Centre is accountable for the lesson planning and instructing of the adaptive equestrian programs. This individual applies a combination of CanTRA and/or PATH Intl. as well as Equestrian Canada practices to the planning and development of a progressive lesson plan that addresses the goals and objectives of each individual participant or group of participants.
Responsibilities
- To develop program goals together with participants and their caregivers in order to provide direction for lesson objectives and planning.
- To plan and implement an individualized, progressive lesson plan for each participant.
- To assess and review participant files as required to ensure they are complete and to familiarize themselves with the participant.
- To ensure familiarization of active program horses prior to use in their lessons in order to make sure they are appropriately matched and to help provide the best possible experience for their participant.
- Adjusts or changes horse pairing as needed based on compatibility as well as overall goals of the participant.
- Assists in horse evaluations and mock lesson scenarios when requested and planned by the Equine Manager.
- To assign volunteers specific roles or responsibilities during lessons and to ensure their safety and professionalism when working with the horses and participants.
- To ensure appropriate preparation of the horses for their lessons.
- Assists the Volunteer Coordinator when required in the planning and delivering of volunteer workshops and training.
- Completion of Participant Lesson Notes within one week of lesson completion in case instructor coverage is required.
- Must ensure that all upgrading, qualifications and memberships are on file with the Director of Operations
- Provides input when requested into the creation of organizational policies and procedures.
- Maintains a clean and safe work environment at all times to ensure safety standards are being met.
- Upholds organizational standards in a congenial respective manner.
- Ensures that all incidents are reported and protocol is followed.
- Participates in awareness opportunities to promote Hope Haven programs.
- Participates in instructor and staff meetings as well as workshops as required.
- Hope Haven Instructors report to the Director of Operations.
Qualifications:
- Excellent verbal and written communication as well as organizational skills.
- A strong problem solver with a proactive attitude who is able to work effectively in a busy environment.
- Exemplifies the core values, mission and purpose of Hope Haven when interacting with clients, staff, volunteers and community partners.
- Develops and maintains positive working relationships (internally and externally) and positively influences others to help achieve results/goals for the organization.
- Experience working with individuals with disabilities is an asset.
Education and Training:
- Minimum level of certification: CanTRA CTRBI, PATH Intl. CTRI or EC Instructor of Beginners (**willing to assist with certification if deemed appropriate).
- Equestrian experience required with ability to pass EC English Rider level 6.
- Minimum of High School Diploma, post secondary preferred.
Standard First Aid/CPR certification up to date.
Job Type: Part Time
Salary Range: $19 – $22 / hour, dependent on experience
